When I taught writing, at the end of the semester, I’d consistently show this slam poetry on the importance of proofreading. A caveat: it is a little blue (R-rated) in places.

Books I used in teaching include William Zinsser’s On Writing Well (get a newer one — the old editions marvel at the wonders of a newfangled word processor!) and Paula LaRocque’s The Book on Writing.
Great fiction writing books include Elizabeth George’s Write Away, Steven King’s On Writing, Francine Prose’s Reading Like a Writer, and Anne Lamont’s Bird By Bird.
